This post is my personal experience plus public information I have collected. It is not medical advice. Talk to a dermatologist before you start or change anything.
If you are on hair-loss Reddit or YouTube in India, you have heard about oral minoxidil. The same drug that is in my Morr F bottle, but as a tablet, once a day, in a very low dose. People ask me about it because I have been on the topical solution since 30 November 2019 and want to know whether I have switched.
I have not. I am still on 1ml of Morr F 5% twice a day in October 2026. But I did read up on brands, doses, side effects and what r/tressless India is buying. This is that homework.
What oral minoxidil is, in plain words
Minoxidil tablets were made for severe high blood pressure, under the original brand Loniten, at doses up to around 50mg a day. Low-dose oral minoxidil, or LDOM, means taking a small fraction of that, usually 0.25mg to 5mg a day, for hair. This is off-label everywhere. The Indian expert consensus by Godse and others in the International Journal of Trichology (2023) says it plainly: oral minoxidil is not approved for alopecia, and many dermatologists use it off-label.
Oral minoxidil brands sold in India
Every tablet below is the same salt in a different box. These are the brands I could find on the big pharmacy apps or in trade listings in October 2026. Prices are strip MRP as I saw them that week; the apps usually show 15 to 30 percent off.
| Brand | Maker | Strengths | Pack price (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lonitab | Intas | 1.25mg, 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg | Around ₹281 for 30 x 1.25mg (Apollo). Around ₹187 for 10 x 2.5mg (1mg, PharmEasy). Around ₹448 for 10 x 5mg (Apollo, PharmEasy). Around ₹703 for 10 x 10mg (1mg) |
| Mintop tablet | Dr. Reddy's | 2.5mg | Around ₹170 for 10 (Apollo). One 1mg listing showed a much higher MRP, so check the current price |
| Minoboost | Glowderma | 2.5mg | Around ₹200 for 10 (PharmEasy) |
| Minoxihead | Asher | 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg | Check the current price. I only saw it on trade listings, not on the big apps |
| Minoxytop | Healing Pharma | 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg | Check the current price |
Lonitab is the one most people name, and the only brand I found in 1.25mg, which is the starting dose in the Indian consensus. The Mintop tablet is from Dr. Reddy's, the same company as the Mintop solution. Minoxihead comes up on r/tressless, but I only found it on IndiaMART-type sellers, and I would not buy a Schedule H tablet from a trade listing.
Every listing I opened said "Prescription required". Minoxidil tablets are Schedule H in India, so a chemist is supposed to ask for one.
The dose dermatologists actually use
Ramírez-Marín and Tosti, in the Indian Dermatology Online Journal (2022), put the usual range at 0.25mg to 1.25mg a day for women and 2.5mg to 5mg for men. The multicentre safety study by Vañó-Galván and colleagues in JAAD (2021), 1,404 patients, used 0.25mg to 5mg a day.
The Indian consensus (Godse et al., 2023) is more cautious. Men: start at 1.25mg a day and, if needed, go up by 1.25mg every three months to a maximum of 5mg. Women: start at 0.625mg, a quarter of a scored 2.5mg tablet, maximum 2.5mg. Dr Kiran Godse, at EADV 2024, also said take it at night and taper rather than stop suddenly, which can trigger a shed. So the realistic range for a man in India is 1.25mg to 5mg, and the 10mg tablets exist for blood pressure, not hair.
One thing from my finasteride days. I started on 1mg in 2019, cut it to 0.25mg at day 54, and wrote a post on what happens with higher doses. With every one of these drugs, the lowest dose that works is the dose. The hypertrichosis numbers below show why.
Side effects: what the studies report
Hair in places you did not ask for
Hypertrichosis, extra hair on the face, arms and back, is the most common side effect by far. In the Vañó-Galván study (JAAD 2021) it affected 15.1% of patients. The Randolph and Tosti review in JAAD (2021), 17 studies and 634 patients, found it clearly dose dependent: under 10% of people on 0.25mg a day, over 50% on 5mg a day. For women it is the main reason the dose stays low.
Dizziness, fluid, fast heart
In the 1,404 patient study: lightheadedness 1.7%, fluid retention 1.3%, tachycardia 0.9%, headache 0.4%, swelling around the eyes 0.3%, insomnia 0.2%. Only 1.2% stopped because of these, and no life-threatening events were reported. The Indian consensus quotes a wider range for leg swelling, 4% to 10%, from other studies.
The heart question
Pericardial effusion means fluid around the heart. The old prescribing information at blood pressure doses mentions it in about 3% of treated patients, but those doses are many times higher than hair doses. A 2024 analysis of the US FDA adverse event database by Gupta and colleagues in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found a reporting signal for pericardial effusion even at 2.5mg and under. On the other side, Kincaid and colleagues in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (2024) scanned 51 people on low-dose oral minoxidil and 49 controls with ultrasound and found small effusions in about 6% of both groups, none symptomatic. So: rare, not zero, not settled. This is the biggest reason the dermatologist section below is not a formality.
Who should not take it
From the Indian consensus and the drug information: anyone with a history of heart disease, swelling of the feet, or blood pressure that swings; anyone with pheochromocytoma; anyone allergic to minoxidil; and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Topical vs oral: what I actually know from 6 years on the solution
I have never taken the tablet, so I will not pretend. Here is what six years on the solution looks like.
My routine has not changed since day 1: 1ml of Morr F 5% in the morning, 1ml at night, every day. The routine is the treatment. Minoxidil does not care how motivated you were in month one; it cares whether you applied it in month thirty-one. That is the honest reason people look at the tablet. Randolph and Tosti (2021) list poor compliance with twice-daily application as a main reason it gets considered.
Side effects on the solution, for me, were an itchy scalp in the first few weeks that faded on its own. Nothing beyond that. The solution stays on your head; the tablet goes everywhere. That is the trade.
On results I will not compare, because I only have one side of the data. My one year results post has the photos from the solution. Whether the tablet would have done better for me, I do not know.
One point from the Indian consensus that surprised me: because oral minoxidil is usually given to people who did not get results with the topical, adding the topical on top may not give extra benefit. The choice is mostly either/or, not both.
Would I switch?
I am not taking oral minoxidil and I have not tried it. I never went to a dermatologist for my hair, so nobody has suggested it to me. The topical solution has done its job for six years, with dandruff as the only side effect, and I am not willing to trade that for tablets that need a heart check. If the topical stops working for me, that is when I would see a doctor and ask.
What people on r/tressless India are using
I could only read summaries of some threads, not every comment, so take this as a rough picture. The brands that come up again and again are Lonitab (Intas), the Mintop tablet (Dr. Reddy's) and Minoxihead (Asher); an August 2026 thread asking which Indian generic to buy got those three as answers. A September 2026 post asked whether a Lonitab 2.5mg strip was genuine, so people are clearly buying from places they do not trust. On r/IndianHaircare, one user moved from Lonitab 2.5mg to the Mintop 2.5mg tablet to save about 30% and said the Lonitab tablet was bigger. I also saw a few people who started the tablet without seeing a doctor. Read the heart section again before you copy them.
Talk to a dermatologist first
I understand the instinct to skip the doctor. Most of us started the solution without one. The tablet is different.
It is prescription-only. Minoxidil tablets are Schedule H in India. The apps will ask for a prescription and a proper chemist will too.
It needs a heart check first. The Indian consensus says the dermatologist should ask about heart disease, foot swelling and blood pressure before starting. Many will check your blood pressure and some will want an ECG. That is them ruling out the one side effect that can actually hurt you.
It needs a dose plan. Start low, go up slowly, every three months at most, and do not stop suddenly. A dermatologist writes that plan; a pharmacy listing does not. And if you have had heart trouble, you are on blood pressure medicine, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding, every source I read says the same thing: not this drug, or not without a doctor who knows your history.
FAQ
Is oral minoxidil available in India?
Yes. Lonitab by Intas, the Mintop tablet by Dr. Reddy's, Minoboost, Minoxihead and Minoxytop are sold in India in 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg, with Lonitab also in 1.25mg. As of October 2026 a strip of 10 x 2.5mg was around ₹170 to ₹200 MRP depending on the brand.
What is the dose of oral minoxidil for hair loss?
Studies use 0.25mg to 5mg a day. The Indian consensus (Godse et al., 2023) suggests men start at 1.25mg and go up by 1.25mg every three months to a maximum of 5mg, and women start at 0.625mg with a maximum of 2.5mg. Your dermatologist decides where you start. The 10mg tablets are blood pressure doses, not hair doses.
Is oral minoxidil better than topical?
Nobody has followed the two side by side for years, and I have only used the solution, so I cannot say. The tablet is easier to stick with, and dermatologists mostly reach for it when the solution has not worked or the person cannot keep the routine. If the solution is working and you can keep the routine, nothing I read says you must switch.
Can I take oral minoxidil without a prescription?
Legally, no. Minoxidil tablets are Schedule H in India and every pharmacy listing I checked says prescription required. People do get hold of it, and the Reddit threads prove that. But the whole point of the prescription is the heart check before you start, and that is not something you can do for yourself.
